Hello,

I'm translating a CV, and I'm stuck with this TFE thing, I know it's a "travail de fin d'études", but I can't find an equivalent in English. I've serched on proz, on the grand dico terminologique, and basically with google, but still, I'm stuck! Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks!

Elodie

    'dissertation' would do it in an academic context. If it more a practical course, there is another term, but it escapes me right now, let me know if this is what you are after and I will dig around my brain a bit!! ;-)

    I think final project would work for a regular course, or perhaps capstone project. In American English, I think a dissertation is usually for a doctorate degree.

    In British English Dissertation is for a normal degree and thesis is for the doctoral degree - I think its the same in the US as well.

    I don't think so - in the US, a thesis is usually for a Master's degree. We don't usually have to do any of these for a normal (bachelor's) degree, although some bachelor degree programs require a final/capstone project.

    There is overlap between the terms, nevertheless. Travail de fin d'études (5)

    Goodness me! how did we get to have such variation between two countries!! Travail de fin d'études (7) I have never heard of a capstone project - must be US only. So lets hope kimgordon can work out what she needs from all this!!

    actually it's really a job (paid etc...) and i need to express the idea of "end of studies"
    something like "final work....blablabla..."

    anything closer ?

    Or could i say " i'm completing my studies as a....' ?

    I was a little quick in writing my response. In the US, a student in their final year of, say, finance, will often seek a "paid internship" at a bank or some such to complete their studies. Not only are they paid, but they also receive academic credit for working. The internship sometimes -- even often -- leads to a permanent position in the company.

    Does this capture the sense?

    i guess...
    so there's no expression with "end/finishing/completing" in it ?

    Sorry, I didn't see your previous posting -- I took too long writing my own!

    Sure, there's an expression. But, is your emploi de fin d'études temporary, permanent, etc. CDD/CDI are the terms right? That might help clarify the sense before I jump into an expression.

    but the point is really that it is a mandatory part of your studies, that is is the final part of them

    ah....

    my studies (will) culminate in a paid internship lasting for... 6 months/1 year ... for which I will receive academic credit toward my degree.

    Does that work?

    Hi !

    It means "completing your studies"

    final year of studies would be the correct translation I think.

    My BA was 25 years ago so this might have changed but it required a dissertation so I think that you may use that.

    Alternatively end of course assignment could be used.

    Thesis => mémoire

    It's usually what completes a master degree

    Hello everybody! (even a long time after...)

    Regularly encountering the problem of translating "travail de fin d'études" to English, I've searched quite a few times. To sum it all up, I came to the following categorization:

    - Final project for a bachelor's degree (more practical);
    - Dissertation for a master's degree (normal degree);
    - Thesis for doctoral degree.

    I also found "work graduation" and would rather say "graduation work". But even there, it's sounds to me like something related to the graduation ceremony, so I'll stick to the 3 above.
